Commission adopts Praxis Bridge option for additional educator exams

At its meeting, Jeff Briski, director of educator development, licensure, and family engagement, described the Praxis Bridge option as a pathway that "allows an educator who fails their Praxis test within 1 standard error of measurement, 1 SEM, of the passing score to take a professional learning module instead of retaking the full exam." Briski said the module provides practice items, a knowledge check and is aligned to the candidate’s weakest content area.
Commissioner Teresa Schultz, a new commissioner, asked whether the module includes a follow-up assessment; Briski replied that the module contains practice items and a knowledge check that candidates can take multiple times until they meet the required level. Commissioner Hawkins shared a colleague’s experience using the elementary Praxis Bridge module and urged the commission to approve the broader rollout, calling the module "wonderful" for streamlining remediation.
President Rosar then entertained a motion to adopt the Praxis Bridge option for basic skills (math, English, reading), secondary English, special education foundational knowledge, and the Principles of Learning and Teaching exams for the indicated grade bands. Commissioner Hawkins moved to adopt; Commissioner Collier seconded. The motion passed by voice vote with ayes and no recorded nays.

Next steps: Briski said additional Praxis Bridge exams will be rolled out in the fall as they become available and the department will bring implementation details back to the commission for future review.
