The Martin County School Board approved a revised student progression plan (pulled from the consent agenda) on Oct. 21 after staff clarified how missing assignments would be recorded and scored.
Doctor Moriarty explained the revision: "Missing assignments or assessments shall be entered into the grade book as a Z until the end of the designated makeup work period, at which point they will be converted to a 0," addressing earlier concerns that missing work was being recorded as a 50 rather than a zero. He moved to approve the item and the motion was seconded.
The measure passed with one dissent. Miss Roberts said she would vote against the recommendation, stating a concern about the mathematics of converting percent scales to a 4.0 grade-scale: "The there's a mathematical truism when you convert a percent scale to a 4 point scale, and doing this, is not mathematically correct," she said.
The board recorded the approval with five votes in favor and one opposed. The revised progression plan will be published and implemented according to district timelines and the instructional services department will follow up with board reporting as requested.
No amendments to the plan were recorded at the Oct. 21 meeting.
