DeWitt athletics reports championship seasons, new safety equipment and Nike contract

Mike Brian, DeWitt's athletic director, presented the district's annual athletics report, noting program scale, student participation and recent competitive successes.

Brian said district enrollment for the year was about 951 and rose to approximately 955, with roughly 867 student athletes across 27 programs and 47 teams. He highlighted that the average GPA for student athletes was 3.64 (compared with a 3.36 average for the high school) and that 322 student athletes met the academic honor threshold used by the district.

On the field, the district recorded multiple league and regional championships across fall, winter and spring sports, and several teams advanced deep into postseason play. Brian also recognized coaching staff and booster‑club and community partnerships that funded facility upgrades such as new bleachers, a scoreboard and infield sod on the freshman baseball field.

On safety, Brian said the district purchased 13 portable AEDs so every in‑season team has an AED available; the devices are redistributed by season to match teams's schedules. He cited national AED usage statistics and said the equipment travels with teams.

Brian announced the district will transition its uniform contract from Under Armour to Nike beginning July 1; he said the decision reflects product quality, perceived stability of the contract and some financial incentive, while existing Under Armour uniforms will be used until they need replacement. Board members and staff discussed PA placement, streaming for pool events, and facilities work tied to a bond committee.

The board did not take an action specific to the athletics report but thanked Brian for the update.
