CTA reports summer ridership gains and year‑to‑date revenue ahead of budget; RTA earmarks $74 million for 2026

Tom McCall, CTA finance staff, told the Finance, Audit and Budget Committee on Sept. 10 that July showed particularly strong ridership and system‑generated revenue was positive to both last year and budget. He reported month and year‑to‑date variances, noting July system revenue of 2,600,000 (positive to budget), year‑to‑date system revenue 10,400,000 positive to budget and 18,000,000 ahead of the prior year. McCall said operating expenses were generally on target and that CTA made an additional one‑month payment into its injuries and damages reserve to rebuild that fund.
Director Raquel asked about a $74,000,000 transfer from the Regional Transportation Authority to CTA. McCall said that figure represents RTA’s public funding marks for 2026 — non‑statutory allocations that the RTA has identified for CTA (funds that in prior years would have gone to other service boards). He said the allocation will be incorporated into CTA’s 2026 public funding assumptions and reflected when staff develops next year’s budget.
The committee approved the minutes from its Aug. 13 meeting and placed the capital improvement program amendment and other items on the omnibus for board consideration.
