Saint Marys names Kenneth Michael Schafer as next police chief, effective Jan. 1, 2026

City staff recommended Sergeant Kenneth Michael Schafer as the next chief of police following Chief Tom Nicholas's announced retirement at year-end. Staff told council that Schafer has more than 21 years of law-enforcement experience, including 17 years serving Saint Marys, and has served in supervisory roles and as the department's canine handler.
"It is with great confidence that I submit the recommendation to city council for the appointment of Kenneth Michael Schafer as the next chief of police for the city of Saint Marys," a staff presenter told council. If approved, Schafer's duties would begin on Jan. 1, 2026, with swearing-in scheduled for the council reorganization meeting on Jan. 5, 2026. A motion to appoint Schafer carried on a voice vote (moved by Tony; seconded by Ned).
Council members congratulated Schafer and expressed confidence in department continuity. The appointment is final as recorded in the meeting transcript; the administration will schedule the swearing-in during the January reorganization meeting.
