Shelton planning commission approves gas station sign package for 99 Bridgeport Ave

The Shelton Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a certificate of zoning compliance for new signs at the gas station at 99 Bridgeport Avenue during its special meeting on Sept. 17.

Chair Virginia Harger said the application had been tabled at the Sept. 10 meeting because sign layouts were missing; Miss Castro confirmed the zoning subcommittee reviewed the newly submitted layouts and recommended approval. Manar Baker, the sign company representative, described the work as replacement signs and vinyl wraps for dispensers featuring the new Miles logo and a canopy logo. Baker spelled his name for the stenographer during his introduction.

Commissioners questioned whether the signage was replacing existing panels or adding new elements and raised readability concerns about the selected font. Baker said the owners favored including a company motto on the pump, but commissioners expressed reluctance to place prominent wording at a low height on the main ID sign. Baker confirmed the disputed wording had been removed from the main tower mock-up; commissioners requested staff and the zoning subcommittee review the monument sign and any tenant-name updates, noting that a tenant (referred to in the record as Crave House) would need to apply separately if it seeks placement on the plaza sign.

Commissioner Kelly moved to approve sign application 25-44 (Miles Energy) with staff review and zoning subcommittee review of the tower; Commissioner Christiano seconded. Chair Harger called a roll-call vote and each present commissioner voted "aye." The motion passed 6–0.

The commission approved the sign package with the condition that staff and the zoning subcommittee verify the monument/tower details and any tenant-name changes before the work proceeds.
