Middle school students urge Sparks City Council to address oversized, high‑power electric bikes

Two students from Sky Ranch Middle School told the Sparks City Council on Sept. 8 that they have observed a recent uptick in large, high‑powered electric bicycles and e‑motorcycles ridden in the city and urged officials to consider safety steps.
"Some of these bikes weigh more than 100 pounds," Micah told the council, and Ben said he had seen models that "make over 8,000 watts," remarks the students used to describe what they called out‑of‑compliance vehicles. The students said many riders are minors and that the machines are being ridden in ways they consider unsafe.
Mayor Ed Lawson told the students the council could not take a full presentation at that moment because of open‑meeting notice requirements, but invited them to return to give a formal presentation at a future meeting so staff and elected officials could hear more detail and consider next steps.
The council did not take formal action during the public‑comment period. The students were told the council's meeting calendar would include a time for them to present additional information and materials so staff can evaluate whether changes to enforcement or regulations are required.
