The City of Josephine on Sept. 8 proclaimed September 2025 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month and received a public comment from American Legion Post 100 urging broader community action.
Jim Watson, past commander of American Legion Post 100, addressed the council during the public comment period, citing national and state figures and promoting the 988 crisis line. "Every 11 minutes someone dies by suicide," Watson said, noting veteran-focused services offered by his post and the availability of a local clinic in Roy City. He encouraged residents to dial 988 for crisis support and offered the post’s resources, including yard signs and an outreach program.
City staff read the proclamation declaring the month’s purpose: to raise awareness of prevention resources and to encourage residents to check on family, friends and neighbors. The proclamation referenced rising suicide mortality across Texas and urged local education about mental-health resources.
Mayor and council members thanked Watson and noted the city’s website should link to 988 and other resources; one council member asked staff to confirm whether the 988 notice was currently posted on the city website. Watson also offered information on post services, scholarships and community programs that, he said, support veterans and families.
The proclamation carries no regulatory action; it is a recognition and a call for public outreach. Council did not take any separate fiscal action during the item.
