Planning unveils interactive residential development dashboard; staff to add more features

Brunswick County planning staff demonstrated a new interactive residential development dashboard (2015–present) with approved, proposed, abandoned and annexed development views, construction progress symbology and data export features; commissioners asked about extending it to municipalities and adding commercial and rezoning dashboards.
Brunswick County planning staff on June 16 introduced a new residential development dashboard designed to make project data (since 2015) more accessible to the public, planning board and county staff.
The dashboard, presented by planning staff and GIS analyst Garrett Hawkins, includes six sections: data highlights, approved developments, proposed developments, abandoned/active projects, annexed developments and City of Northwest cases (Northwest contracts planning services with the county). Visual symbology shows percent built (0%–98% in examples) and a legend; users can click a development to see approval date, unit counts, types, approved plans and the number of units completed.
Key features and planned additions: - Search and export functions for addresses, development names and case numbers. - Imagery toggle (aerial layer) and a data table downloadable to Excel for further analysis. - Planned future additions: a denied developments section, units under construction, older records predating 2015 and mobile optimization.
Commissioners asked whether municipalities that use county services could be included. Staff said the dashboard currently covers unincorporated Brunswick County plus the City of Northwest (which contracts planning to the county) but they will discuss potential partnerships with other towns.
What to expect: The dashboard is live on the county website planning page under “development dashboard and map” and is updated monthly after planning board meetings. Staff invited commissioners to provide feedback and offered assistance to users.
