Project staff described two options: a faster brick-infill option that adds roughly $3,596.50 to the project cost but avoids a 7–10 week delay, and a cheaper louver order option priced at about $1,157.62 with a long lead time. “We’re in the gym and trying to wrap it up,” said an unnamed project representative, summarizing remaining work and inspections that must be completed before occupancy.
Separately, the board approved a change-order proposal for the Bath Layec (Lavec) Phase 2 asphalt improvements (PR25) for up to five areas. Staff presented a construction estimate of $548,007.69 for areas 1–5, with area 1 at $300,005.97 and area 2 at $82,355.81. Special-inspector allowances for possible full-depth replacement were listed at $56,036.50 (area 1) and $15,003.78 (area 2); staff stressed inspectors could credit back work deemed unnecessary. The board authorized the work with a not-to-exceed framework and asked staff to continue negotiation with contractors to reduce costs where possible.
On scheduling, the board set special-call meetings to expedite the Bath County Middle School renovation: a schematic-design review in mid‑June and a design‑development review in August, with staff estimating the June session would be about 30 minutes and the August meeting likely longer to review more developed drawings.
The board also approved several administrative and personnel items. Members voted to add a $2,000 mock-trial coaching stipend to the 2025–26 extra-service salary schedule and to retroactively pay $2,000 to the coach who led the high school team this year. The tentative fiscal‑year 2025 budget was approved by motion; staff said the budget uses a KDE per‑pupil base of $4,586, includes modest increases for professional development and textbooks, and carries a contingency of $850,000 (3.39%), above the 2% statutory minimum.
Other routine items approved included final calendar amendments (May 28 as the last day for students; June 4 as the last day for staff), and a four‑year copier/printer contract award to ProSources following a competitive bid process. Staff noted the bid evaluation used a detailed rubric; board members asked about prior service history with the vendor before approving. Retirement recognitions and a reception for district retirees were held before the meeting’s business agenda.
What happens next: staff will coordinate special‑call meetings for middle‑school schematic and design approvals in June and August and will continue negotiations and inspections related to the asphalt and HVAC change orders; the tentative budget will move into the working‑budget stage in September, when figures are finalized.
