Blue Valley presents draft curriculum updates; board will review for approval in June

Kelly June, executive director of academic services, presented draft curriculum documents to the board on May 12, explaining the documents are the result of a year‑long review led by teacher authorship teams and aligned to Kansas College and Career Readiness Standards. June said the presentation was informational and no action was requested; drafts will be on the June agenda for formal approval and, if adopted, would take effect in August.
June highlighted changes in several departments: Career & Technical Education updates to align with KSDE CTE pathways; a middle‑school mathematics change to compact higher level standards into Accelerated Math 6 so sixth graders cover seventh‑grade content in half of seventh grade; three AP science courses aligned to College Board syllabi; social studies updates including applied psychology and international relations; and revised middle‑school visual arts courses emphasizing real‑world skills and career orientation.
Board members asked whether the district provides lesson plans; June said the district provides scope and sequence documents and resources, but daily lesson plans are developed by teachers and PLCs. June tied the curricular process to Board Policy 4000, which governs cyclical curriculum review. June said hundreds of teachers contributed to the drafts through writing teams and feedback cycles.
What’s next: The draft curriculum will return for board action in June; materials approved in June would be implemented beginning in August.
