Principals report high attendance and program growth; district previews summer offerings

At the June 9 meeting Bennington Public Schools principals and activity staff reviewed end-of-year results and summer programming plans.
Elementary Principal Chad Boyse said the district—s summer program had "just over 200 students," that principals planned to repeat a well-received friendship-races activity and that end-of-year celebrations across five buildings were successful. The middle school reported roughly 44 students enrolled in summer school; the high school said 28 students registered for credit-recovery summer classes and celebrated 235 graduates this year.
Student-services staff (Dan Balmett) reported an overall attendance rate of approximately 96% and chronic absenteeism of 6.77% districtwide, which the presentation contrasted with a cited state average of about 22%. Activities director Andrew Cole highlighted growth in extracurriculars (band up by roughly 35 students, musical up by 24, FBLA more than doubled), two state championships and continued concerns about facilities and scheduling as participation increases. Cole also summarized a digital-ticket pilot using the Bound platform and the district—s consideration of adopting Bound more widely for activity scheduling.
What happens next: Principals and staff will proceed with planned summer offerings, finalize professional-learning schedules for the fall and continue to evaluate participation, facilities and staffing impacts for activities.
