District reports hiring progress, JROTC delay, $300,000 in kitchen repairs and chiller issues

Mr. Garmin (personnel and operations) reported to the Beech Grove City Schools board on Aug. 12 that the district completed a successful hiring season, including 14 new teachers who participated in orientation on July 24. He said the district is still awaiting approval to hire a JROTC instructor and that Sergeant Major Tholmer is helping with placements; the hiring process is moving slowly through the Department of Defense.
Garmin said the district hired several bus drivers and a few new bus monitors over the summer but continues to experience challenges attracting and retaining bus monitors.
On food service, Garmin credited the Chartwells team with increasing participation after surveying students and adjusting menus. He said closed-lunch implementation initially depressed participation but numbers have steadily increased following menu changes.
Regarding facilities, Garmin told the board the district spent about $300,000 last year on kitchen repairs and replacements and that additional equipment will require replacement in coming years. He described a recent middle-school chiller failure that began with a sensor problem, required reclamation of refrigerant and additional repairs; the chiller is roughly 16 years old and commercial service expects periodic repairs ahead.
Garmin also outlined a short-term plan to patch and seal parking-lot cracks to defer a full sealcoat because the district does not currently have funding for large-scale resurfacing. He requested board approval of the submitted personnel reports covering July 11 through Aug. 7, which the board moved and approved.
The board asked clarifying questions about the chiller repairs and whether the unit is back to capacity; Garmin said daytime temperatures can run to the low to mid-70s and that air-quality tests were expected within days.
