Construction mishaps and code requirements delay South Boulevard Athletic Complex; vendor to correct errors at no cost, district says

District maintenance and construction staff told the Buildings & Grounds committee on Sept. 8 that the South Boulevard Athletic Complex project encountered multiple delays after prefabricated steel beams arrived mis-measured. Facilities said the mis-measure made on-site installation impossible; a structural engineer and fabricator are working on corrective plates and refabrication. Facilities said the fabricator has cooperated and that the correction work will not cost the district.
Staff also said state code enforcement requires a fire alarm for any newly constructed stadium seating (indoor or outdoor) that is newly built; the requirement had not been anticipated to be enforced on earlier projects but is being applied to new construction. Temporary power and other installation sequencing problems also slowed progress. Because of the site-readiness concerns, the district moved one home game to Ritter and planned to bring in temporary toilets and hand-washing stations if needed.
Facilities reported approximately 471 work orders in the maintenance system (79 open, 392 closed) and described progress on multiple school projects, including punch-list work for a new senior cafeteria, drainage excavation challenges at Senior High, and a forthcoming DeRidder Athletic Complex bid and board vote in November.
Next steps: facilities will return with a definite timeline after the refabrication and fire-alarm installation date are firm and will present bids to the board when ready.
