At the March 10 meeting the Beatrice Public Schools Board of Education held first readings of two negotiated policy changes and heard operations updates from administration.
Mister Alexander presented Policy 40.35, the sick leave donation bank, describing an agreed change that would allow staff to donate up to three unused sick days (previously one) and to donate at the end of the year; those days would be available for colleagues in catastrophic situations. He also presented proposed language for Policy 41.10 on salary guides that would allow the district, in specific cases with limited applicant pools, to place a new qualified hire up to 10% above initial placement on the salary schedule; that placement would remain until base-salary or step movement exceeded the boosted placement. Mister Alexander said the BEA negotiations chair would be notified before such a placement is used.
In a legislative update, Mister Alexander described LB645 and amendment AM948 affecting the state teacher retirement pool; he summarized the amendment’s effect on employee contribution rates based on funding ratios and noted the employer/district contribution rate would remain unchanged in the amendment language discussed. He cautioned that further debate at the Legislature could change details.
Administrative operations items included: maintenance recycling that yielded $2,108.80 from scrap metal sales, completion of ELPA testing soon to yield data on English language learners, active searches for high school volleyball and basketball coaches, and a list of planned summer facilities projects including turf upgrades, new carpet and sidewalk repairs. The district will seek summer mowing bids and intends to keep elementary mowing work in-house this year.
The items on first reading will return for future board action where formal approvals are required; the board recorded no public comment on these items during the meeting.
