Board approves $400,000 deductive change order for Hopewell school project

The Bradley County Board of Education voted Aug. 14 to approve a deductive change order at the Hopewell construction project that reduces phase 1 work by about $400,000 and shifts that scope into phase 2.
Project staff said the changes descoped work tied to the fire alarm and improvements to existing facilities rather than new construction, and that the items will be deferred to the next phase where they make more sense. Presenters characterized the change as budget-neutral in aggregate because deferred items will be rebudgeted in phase 2; they described the deductive change as a way to re-sequence work and stated the construction team remains on schedule overall.
The board moved and seconded approval of the change order and adopted the motion by roll call. Project leaders reported the site is ‘‘out of the ground,’’ foundations are poured, playgrounds and parking lots are in place and underground utilities are complete. Staff noted some site-specific challenges, including underground conditions encountered during excavation, but said these have been managed and progress is strong.
Board members also discussed minor schedule impacts to playground access while crews made adjustments and heard that the state fire marshal worked closely with the district to coordinate openings and occupancy requirements.
