District moves meal production after hazardous ceiling discovered at Desert Valley kitchen

The presenter described work‑order backlogs from July and said facility staff found water damage and wiring/plumbing issues after investigating a hood and suppression-system problem. "Mark got up in the ceiling, and it turns out we have a false ceiling... there is more. I'm not even telling you all of it," the presenter said, noting cracked vents, return-air issues and other deficiencies that could pose safety risks.
To maintain meal service, the district will use the Fox Creek production kitchen to prepare meals and transport them to Desert Valley while in-house crews complete demolition. The presenter said in-house crews will perform demolition and the district will contract the reinstallation phase; staff estimated demolition and initial repairs could be completed in two weeks, possibly three.
Board members asked whether other kitchens could serve as alternatives; staff said Coyote Canyon is not a full production kitchen and would not accommodate the needed volume. The presenter also reported several HVAC units failed since school started and that maintenance staff are addressing compressors and replacements.
The board instructed staff to proceed with immediate safety repairs and to keep members updated on timelines and costs.
