The Blount County School Board voted unanimously to name Prospect Elementary School—s gymnasium the Lisa Taylor Gymnasium, honoring the retiring physical education teacher for her lengthy service and community partnerships.
Board member Bridal Moore introduced a letter from Dr. Byrd and invited community members and students to speak. Dr. Byrd described Taylor as "the absolute best that I've ever encountered," citing grant work, leadership among county PE teachers and creative programs such as "power 20" recess activities. Multiple students spoke in support: Paisley Byrd told the board Taylor "has taught me how to be a good athlete, how to keep being healthy, and how to be a good teammate," and Everett Ernsberger called Taylor "one of the biggest inspirations in my life."
After the public remarks, the board made a motion and a second to approve the naming; the chair called for 'aye' and the motion passed by unanimous voice vote. The board thanked Dr. Byrd and the students and said a surprise recognition is planned during Taylor—s final field day.
The action formalizes a local recognition for a staff member who will also appear on the district retiree list for 2024–25.
