The Batavia City School District on Wednesday approved a proposed $63,310,108 general fund budget for the 2025–26 school year and set a public hearing for 6 p.m. on May 12 and the district budget vote for May 20 between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.
During a final budget presentation, Mr. Lang said the revenue estimate reflects the governor’s aid proposal while noting that the state legislature had not yet enacted a budget. “At this point, the state has not approved the governor’s state aid figures,” he said, and the district is using the governor’s proposal in its projections. The plan would raise the tax levy to $20,790,870, an increase of $451,534, or 2.22% from the prior year; Lang said that translates to roughly a $69.80 increase for a $200,000 home.
The superintendent’s office plans no changes to the total since the last board review; the presentation broke down expenditures with instruction remaining the largest share (about 57% of the general fund), a 22.3% increase in general support, an approximately 5% increase in instruction overall, and projected transportation cost increases tied to rebidding outplacement special-education routes.
Lang said the district is reducing appropriated fund balance in line with its long-range financial plan and increasing an interfund transfer to stabilize the tax cap as some debt service falls off. “We are contributing a little more to our current capital project, and that’s why you’re seeing an increase in the interfund transfers line,” he said.
Board members voted to adopt the proposed budget for presentation at the hearing and to place it on the May 20 ballot as Proposition 1. The board also confirmed logistics for voting by election district: voters north of Main Street will vote at Robert Morris and voters south of Main (Route 5) at the high school.
What’s next: The district will hold its budget hearing May 12 and the districtwide vote on May 20. If the state enacts different aid figures before those dates, the district said it will monitor and report changes as required.
Votes at a glance: The board recorded voice approvals on multiple routine items during the meeting, including the adoption of the proposed 2025–26 general fund budget to be presented at the May 12 hearing and placed on the May 20 ballot.
