Avery County commissioners give first approval to raise landfill tipping fee to $62 per ton

Michelle, county staff, summarized the changes and said the ordinance language is being updated to establish a $62 per-ton fee and strike the municipal credits previously in Article 4. Staff explained that because fewer than the full board was present this evening, the amendment requires two separate votes for final adoption and therefore will return on the next month’s agenda for a second vote.
A commissioner noted Eric had reviewed the language and found it satisfactory; no formal public testimony on the amendment was taken during the meeting. The board made and seconded a motion to proceed with the amendment on first reading and took a voice vote to advance the proposal.
Final adoption will require a second vote at a future meeting when the board can satisfy the ordinance’s voting threshold or the full board is present. No changes to the ordinance are effective until the second required vote is recorded and any required publication steps are completed.
