Arlington County Police Department and county staff reported progress this week on the county’s nightlife enforcement and business outreach efforts.
Department leaders said they hired a funded fire marshal position and continued combined enforcement visits with zoning, ISD and fire personnel to address safety and code issues at nightlife establishments. The presentation highlighted the launch of a Business Outreach Unit co-led by Moe Rouse and Corporal April Robinson to restore trust with restaurant owners, strengthen training (CPR/hands-to-heart, occupancy/fire-code, food-safety and Naloxone administration) and coordinate with business-improvement districts.
Police outlined Clarendon’s concentrated weekend activity—roughly 26 bars and restaurants with overall venue capacity of about 4,500 and multiple nightly turnover cycles that can create higher weekend population counts. The department said nightlife operations generated approximately 7,300 police hours in calendar year 2024. Staff and board members discussed metrics for success, staffing needs for sustained enforcement, and options to pilot pedestrian-only or traffic-calmed evenings in the commercial corridor.
Board members emphasized the need for proactive outreach to new businesses, clarity on overserving enforcement, and clear channels for residents to report concerns (911 for emergencies, the nonemergency line (703) 558-2222 for noise or chronic issues). Police reiterated the 'see something, say something' guidance and committed to continuing training and collaboration with businesses.
