Arlington County Board confirms commissioners and issues proclamations on housing, suicide prevention and preparedness

The Arlington County Board on Sept. 16 confirmed a roster of appointments to advisory bodies, then read proclamations marking Affordable Housing Awareness Month, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and National Preparedness Month.
Chair read a list of appointments that the board approved by voice vote, including Scott Bridal to the Climate Change, Energy and Environment Commission (term to 09/30/2027), the reappointment of Karen O'Dante to the Disability Advisory Commission (term to 09/30/2028) and designation of O'Dante as chair through 12/31/2025, and numerous other reappointments and appointments across planning, parks, economic development and social services commissions. The chair called a single roll call/voice vote on the full roster; the motion carried unanimously.
During recognitions, the board honored Daniel Ware for eight years of service on the Planning Commission.
The board used proclamations to flag community concerns and county resources. Chair urged residents affected by recent federal workforce layoffs to use county services for resume help, food and housing assistance. Vice Chair Coffey read a proclamation declaring October 2025 Affordable Housing Awareness Month, noting the tenth anniversary of the county’s Affordable Housing Master Plan and more than six years of the county’s Housing Arlington initiative.
Vice Chair Spain read a proclamation for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, citing figures included in the text: nearly 26,000 U.S. firearm suicides annually (about 71 per day) and 1,230 Virginians in 2023. Public-safety staff and community partners were invited to promote crisis resources such as 988 and local hotlines.
Staff from the Department of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management spoke as the board proclaimed National Preparedness Month, urging residents to sign up for Arlington Alert, assemble emergency kits and develop household emergency plans.
The board also recognized local groups including WETA public media and Friends of Urban Agriculture, and public speakers from those organizations described recent activities and services.
The board adjourned after approving the agenda items.
