Students, Transition Center and Ed Foundation spotlighted at Alexandria Public Schools meeting

The Alexandria Public Schools Board opened its meeting with Points of Pride that recognized a successful community response to a cardiac arrest at a pickleball event and highlighted student achievements across academics, athletics and extracurriculars.
Superintendent Sand led recognition of community volunteers and staff who used an on‑site AED and coordinated with EMTs after a cardiac arrest on Nov. 3, 2024; plaques will be displayed near the AED in the school. Students and staff then shared awards: HOSA participants and qualifiers for national competitions, music and orchestra honors, a robotics team that won an Impact Award and went to the world championships, marching band growth and state basketball champions.
Alexandria Area High School academy coach Claire Anderson introduced four student ambassadors who described clubs and programs, including leadership clubs, Unified Club, girls lift club, arts and a 170‑course catalog under the academy model. "These are our 6 drivers that we identified even before the building was built," Anderson said, explaining the program's continuing focus.
Sarah Richards and Transition Center staff detailed services for students aged 18–22 with special education needs that emphasize healthy living, daily living and work skills. The Transition Center described community placements, work‑lab experiences, electives that teach budgeting and dining out skills, partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and Alexandria Technical College, and plans for a new facility and updated curriculum.
The Alexandria Education Foundation presented an impact report and a short video, noting more than $43,000 in grants last year and roughly $26,000 approved this year, $8,700 in scholarships and $10,725 disbursed through the Adopt‑a‑Classroom program. The foundation announced a Radiothon fundraiser on Thursday, April 24, and Cardinal Athletic Foundation fundraising events including a golf fundraiser on June 7.
Board members repeatedly praised the senior portfolio presentations as meaningful demonstrations of student growth and cited examples of students applying classroom learning to real‑world projects. Several trustees encouraged public support for foundation fundraisers and community partnerships that reduce student costs for extracurricular participation.
The meeting closed with administrative updates on parent engagement, bus/car safety at Discovery Middle School and scheduling for an upcoming budget work session.
