Board approves FY26 Opportunity Grant reallocation to support Pre-K and multilingual learners

The Appoquinimink School District board on Aug. 12 approved staff’s plan to reallocate the state Opportunity Grant for fiscal year 2026 to support Pre-K programs, multilingual learners (MLL) and a language-line interpreter service for families.
A district presenter said the FY26 Opportunity Grant increased slightly to just over $2,000,000 from about $1.9 million last year and that the funds are flexible to support low-income and multilingual students. Under the recommended reallocation, staff proposed funding 10 Pre-K teacher positions and seven paraprofessionals, six MLL teachers and one paraprofessional, with additional units available to support both programs. The district will also restore a language-line service to provide interpreters at family meetings, a capacity previously funded through ESSER dollars.
The board moved and approved the reallocation without further questions from members present.
