Anson High awarded $300,000 Golden Leaf grant to expand agriculture CTE program

Anson County Schools announced acceptance of a $300,000 Golden Leaf grant to expand agricultural career and technical education at Anson High School.
"This grant is to expand and enhance the agricultural program at the high school," Dr. Pratt told the board, listing planned uses including new greenhouse benches, dehumidifiers, industrial fans, rebuilding aquaponics and hydroponics systems, and adding simulated/computerized animals for training. The grant is intended to support three pathways in agriculture — horticulture, natural resources and animal science — and to increase the number of students earning certifications and credentials.
Dr. Pratt said the award will support field trips, internships, apprenticeships and partnerships with local agriculture businesses, nonprofit organizations and universities, and that the district hopes to hire a CTE adjunct to expand course offerings. He thanked new partners and community collaborators including the Caraway Foundation, Anson County Cooperative Extension and SPCC.
The presentation noted complementary funding and partner activity: district staff earlier referenced other grants and federal funds that support tutoring and CSI schools; board members asked how forestry and poultry — key local industries — could be incorporated within the grant activities.
Next steps: staff will pursue adjunct hiring, finalize procurement for greenhouse and aquaponics equipment, and seek additional community industry partners to support internships and hands-on experiences.
