Board hears tutoring, summer retesting plans and approves summer-programs application

Anson County Schools presented details of a newly launched targeted tutoring initiative and its summer retesting and remedial plans, while board members questioned slot allocations and equity between schools.
Dr. Roseborough said targeted tutoring began the previous week for students identified by assessment data and is structured to end in early April to allow schoolwide remediation before EOG testing. "We began targeted tutoring and then had to stop due to inclement weather, but we're off and running," she said. The district identified students using level‑1 and level‑2 data and provided transportation for participating students.
On summer retesting, staff said remediation would take place June 2–4, 2025 (four hours of remediation each day), with retest dates scheduled for June 5 and June 6, 2025. Elementary and high‑school daily schedules for the retesting program were also given; staff said they will submit the summer retesting/summer program application to DPI for approval.
Several board members and parents raised equity concerns about how initial tutoring slots were distributed. "It just doesn't seem equitable," a board member said, noting some elementary schools received 60 slots while middle schools — with more tested grades and larger enrollments — were allocated similar numbers. Dr. Roseborough explained allocations reflected state formulas, CSI status and available targeted funds and said the district would re‑examine allocations and consider reallocating TSI/TSF funds where possible.
The board also approved two consent items by voice vote — a personnel report and the summer programs application to request funding. Chairman Truman called for the motion and, after a second, the board signified assent by saying "Aye," and the motion carried.
Next steps: district staff will share PowerPoint materials with board members, review targeted‑student lists with principals, explore reallocating slots where feasible, and proceed with the DPI application process for summer programs.
