Stantec Architects presented schematic designs for Elementary School No. 23 at Cantera Creek and outlined a schedule that includes summer bidding, permitting and about 17 months of construction with a planned move-in in 2027.
Mark Jackson, principal at Stantec, described the site layout, parent and bus loops, a secure corner entry with a check-in vestibule and a two‑story central library. He said the design uses a hybrid of prior Alvin ISD plans and newer elements: “So the CDs, that's what we call construction documents…this summer we’ll be going to bid the project,” and later summarized, “So 2027 is your move in.” The plan includes flex zones, acoustical treatments in large spaces and a pastel color palette intended to stay current over the building’s life.
Trustees asked operational and safety questions: natural light strategies, window sill heights in the gym (Jackson said windows would be high — about 12 feet for security), and schedule contingencies. Jackson noted construction timing was padded to reduce a rushed move-in and that the project is being delivered as a design-bid-build (CSP) contract with a public hard-bid process. The board heard the design as part of the 2024 bond program that funded the new campus.
Next steps described in the presentation are finalizing construction documents, soliciting bids this summer, and returning to the board to recommend a contractor award after bids and permitting are complete. No contract award decisions were made at the meeting.
