Alvin ISD presents preliminary STAR results; district projects improved ratings

Alvin ISD assessment officials presented preliminary STAR results for 2025 and said the district improved across the state's performance levels compared with 2024. The presentation included disaggregated results, district projections and planned next steps for campus goals and curriculum alignment.
"We are excited to share the 2025 STAR results, which does show an increase from the 24 results," Brent Shaw, assessment staff, told the board. He said the district saw increases in the percentage of students scoring at approaches, meets and masters levels across reading, math, science and social studies. Shaw highlighted that some earlier district targets were exceeded: the district's third‑grade reading target for 2025 was 59% meets or above, and the preliminary 2025 result showed 60% meets or above; third‑grade math target was 50% and the preliminary result was 53%; and College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) showed 81% versus a 78% target.
Staff cautioned the numbers are preliminary and in‑house calculations and that the Texas Education Agency will release official ratings later in the week; Shaw said the district uses a standard error measure of "plus 1 or 2 percentage points." On the preliminary district rating staff projected an overall score of about 84 for 2025 (2024 projected 82) and described planned follow up including recalibration of multi‑year goals under House Bill 3.
District curriculum and instructional leaders described no new district initiatives for 2025–26 and emphasized continued focus on a set of research‑based instructional practices (tier 1 instruction, formative assessment, small‑group instruction and targeted coaching) and ongoing professional learning communities. Dr. Shandar Hobbs and Fulvia Shaw outlined content‑area strategies for social studies, reading and math and said instructional coaches and priority campus visits would continue to support implementation.
Trustees praised the preliminary gains and asked for additional detail about secondary CCMR strategies and the campus goals that will feed the October recalibration and the district's five‑year House Bill 3 goals.
