The board voted to accept the report and to approve four appropriations for Amelia County Public Schools that state and federal sources awarded with no required local match: a $176,180 state allocation for one‑time retention bonuses, a $351.06 Perkins grant adjustment, $6,727.68 in federal reallocations, and a $100,000 Title I school improvement award intended for staff professional learning and implementation support.
County finance staff cautioned that expenditures will rise as several long‑term purchases are completed, including federally funded security projects and a special‑needs bus ordered last fall, and they flagged a manual $2 million adjustment pending further reconciliation. Finance presenter Miss Paul said transfers to support schools account for a large portion of year‑to‑date expenditures and urged continued monitoring to ensure fiscal sustainability. The board approved the four school appropriations as a block by voice/hand vote.
During the budget public hearing, several residents and board members discussed outreach and notice of the budget process. Public commenter Bobby Lipe requested clearer distribution of budget notices to residents without reliable internet access; board members replied that the county has used town halls and broad distribution of the local paper in addition to online posting. The board said it will reconvene in a separate advertised meeting next Thursday to take a final vote on the FY26 budget timetable and related ordinance items.
The school appropriation approvals and the finance presentation were procedural actions; the board did not enact tax‑rate changes at this meeting. The next budget meeting is scheduled as an advertised session for final action on appropriations and budget ordinances.
