Altoona board honors Dave Francis for 30 years; student rep outlines start of school year

The Altoona Area School District board paused its regular business to honor board member Dave Francis for 30 years of service.
Saetha Guines, representing the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, presented a plaque and praised Francis as one of the region’s longest-serving school board members. Guines said it was “my distinct honor and privilege to travel here today to honor Mr. Francis for 30 years of school board service to the Altoona community.” Francis responded with personal remarks recalling early budget challenges: “When I got Altoona had a 1.5 deficit. Million. $1,500,000 deficit,” and reflected on the highs and lows of long-term volunteer service.
The board also introduced its student representative for the year, Camille Krug, a senior who said she will report on student needs and events. Krug listed fall calendar highlights including the first day of school for elementary through high school on Aug. 21, a meet-the-teacher night at the high school at 4 p.m. (band to perform at 7:30 p.m.), junior high meet-the-teacher night on Aug. 28, and an involvement fair for freshmen to encourage club participation.
Superintendent remarks welcomed 64 new teachers and staff who attended new-teacher induction last week and noted a new principal, Mr. Peterman, is taking over at Logan Elementary. The superintendent urged family engagement for the new school year.
