Alma School District board honors choir, History Day qualifiers and staff at regular meeting

The Alma School District board spent the opening portion of its regular meeting recognizing students and staff for recent accomplishments.
Miss Tufts, who leads the high school choral program, told the board that 54 students placed in All-Region choirs this year, eight students made the All-State choir, and three upper choirs earned superior ratings and sweepstakes at state-level competitions. "We had eight students make the all state choir this year," Miss Tufts said. She also said the chamber choir placed among the highest-scoring medium-sized programs in Arkansas.
Board members and administrators praised the program’s progress under Tufts’ leadership and thanked students and families for their work.
The board also recognized History Day participants. According to board remarks, about 100 students participated at Alma High School, 42 advanced to regionals, 31 advanced to state, and eight Alma High students qualified for nationals. Two students named as national qualifiers were Jack Snell (senior website) and Ava Mendez (senior group performance); the district said Mendez and her partner will also participate in a showcase at the American History Museum while in Washington, D.C.
Administrators called forward multiple classified employees of the year and building teachers of the year. Named classified honorees included Basil Kenner (district support staff), Janet Camden (primary school), Lauren Wakefield (intermediate school), Belinda Bowen (middle school) and Ashley Dean (high school). Building teachers of the year named were Debbie Barrett (middle school career development/DECA), Danny Hobson (high school performing arts), Emily Engleke (third grade leader) and Amanda Shores (primary/librarian). Principals and colleagues described the honorees’ work ethic, instructional strengths and contributions to school culture.
The recognitions concluded before the board moved on to the consent agenda and other routine business.
