The Albany City School District Board of Education moved and approved the routine consent agenda with one item (Position Control, item 2) set aside for separate discussion.
Board President Srinath Chatur called for a motion to adopt the routine consent agenda and asked whether any members wanted items set aside. Miss Savage asked to set aside the position-control item, calling it a "pretty hefty position control agenda" and asking for a rationale because the packet listed one position created and many positions abolished. The board then adopted the balance of the routine consent agenda; the chair stated the motion passed unanimously.
During the set-aside discussion, HR (miss Theese) and other staff explained the background: the abolitions reflected cabinet decisions documented during last year’s reviews and were driven by a mix of factors including vacancies, collapsed classes due to low enrollment and administrative adjustments. Miss Savage pressed on the point that abolishing positions might be confused with people losing employment; she said, "These are not people... It's just the number of people that we hire," emphasizing that position-control changes refer to staffing authorizations, not individual employees. The superintendent reiterated that board commitments preserved student programs and that "there were no programmatic changes" tied to the abolishments.
Board members requested a rationale and asked staff to provide more context for the position-control list at an upcoming SBU (staff/board update) or meeting, including historical data on positions and clearer explanations for abolitions versus program changes.
No formal vote on position control occurred at this meeting; the board left the item set aside for follow-up.
