School and district leaders described a slate of measurable school improvement goals — often called WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) — and the accountability practices they will use to pursue them.
Superintendent Dr. Papalardo framed the effort around the 4 Disciplines of Execution and said the approach pairs lag measures (benchmarks, state tests) with lead measures that staff can influence. “We are laser focused on a wildly important goal,” he said, and emphasized a cadence of accountability and a public scoreboard to track progress.
Principals from across the district described school-specific WIGs: the high school intends to get “100% growth in math and ELA benchmarks from the beginning till the end of the year,” and elementary and junior high leaders outlined plans to use PLCs, data walls, IXL and targeted interventions (math labs, extra writing classes) as lead measures. One junior-high presenter said the school has pushed more than 50 students toward grade-level proficiency this year through additional interventions.
Directors and support staff described operational steps to support WIGs, including standard operating procedures for business services, onboarding checklists for HR, a technology calendar for accountability and transportation coaching to reduce referrals. Presenters emphasized that many of the WIGs are measured weekly (checklists, PLC sign-offs) and will be revisited at an upcoming board retreat.
Board members responded positively and approved moving forward with the WIG framework; several members requested the board include the WIGs in their January retreat to set and measure goals.
What’s next: principals will continue to report on their scorecards; the district plans to incorporate WIG measures into routine progress reports to the board.
