At the governing‑board meeting staff gave an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program update, reporting enrollment, college-visit activities and plans to expand school‑wide practices.
The AVID presenter (speaker 2) explained AVID’s mission to close achievement gaps and described four domains of implementation: instruction, system, leadership and culture. Enrollment this year included 23 sixth graders, 29 seventh graders and 27 eighth graders; ninth and tenth grades had smaller cohorts (16 and 18 respectively) with eleventh and twelfth grades counting nine and eight students.
The presenter highlighted spring college visits (Arizona State University, Cactus, Grand Canyon, Park and St. Benedictine) and partner work with ASU counselors, and said summer training will help the junior high and high school deepen AVID practices. "When you have a school‑wide AVID program, you can see it in every single classroom," the presenter said.
Board members asked why high‑school AVID numbers were lower; staff cited scheduling conflicts and students' participation in EVIT programs. Members praised AVID for organizational and time‑management skills that support scholarship and postsecondary readiness.
No board action was required; staff said they will continue to monitor enrollment and work on school‑wide fidelity for the coming year.
