Madera council approves $39,900 amendment for citywide tree trimming after large branch fall

The Madera City Council on Aug. 20 approved a third amendment to the West Coast Arborist contract to cover emergency and preventive pruning and trimming across several medians.
Parks Director Joe Hebert told the council that a large branch fell on Mainbury Drive earlier this year and that arborist inspections found extensive rot in one tree and similar conditions in adjacent medians. Hebert said the medians in the Westgate Drive, West 3rd and Mainbury Drive areas contain ash trees that are prone to bark splitting and limb failure, and recommended an additional $39,900 be allocated from the general fund to perform pruning for about 150 trees.
"The quote provided is, $39,900," Hebert said, noting the work is needed before the current agreement balance is fully expended and before the November contract renewal window.
Council members asked about long‑term inventory and whether spacing or removals would be recommended; Hebert said the city maintains a five‑year trimming cycle across quadrants but that some failures were unanticipated and that staff will consult with the arborist about longer‑term spacing or removals.
The council voted unanimously to adopt the resolution approving the amendment and the associated FY 2025–26 budget amendment.
