Board honors teacher Stacy Scholes and recognizes school resource officer Brandon Anderson

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District board used part of its May meeting to recognize two staff members for student-centered work.

Stacy Scholes, a middle‑school history teacher with a 38‑year career and 25 years teaching Pacific Northwest history, received recognition for winning the Governor—s Award of Excellence in Teaching History. In accepting the recognition Scholes delivered her customary concise guidance to students: “You have 3 jobs. Stay safe. Have fun. Take care of people with less power than you make. Good decisions. Come back to me 1 piece.” Colleagues and principals praised her classroom impact and longstanding commitment to helping students reach graduation.

The board also honored School Resource Officer Brandon Anderson for outreach programs including a student toolkit on consent, assault and harassment resources, and an extracurricular initiative called "Badges and Barbells" that offers lunchtime physical‑activity sessions and community events such as boxing nights at the YMCA. Eli Hill principal Gina Longland described how Anderson—s materials and programs helped students gain understanding and confidence; student Meeko Darling told the board Anderson had inspired her to improve her health and keep working toward goals.

Officer Anderson said he was humbled by the recognition and thanked his family and colleagues. Board members and staff took photos and presented certificates and copies of the district newsletter that featured Anderson.

What happens next: these were recognition items; no board action was required. Staff said they will continue to highlight exemplary staff and student programs in future meetings.
