Superintendent reports early-year wins and operational challenges: cell-phone policy, HVAC and athletics

Superintendent Corey gave the board an overview of the early weeks of the school year and operational highlights.

Corey said the district is in its third week of school and implemented late-start Mondays for staff collaboration. He described a largely successful pilot of a phone-free approach at some high schools and the tech center: "I've heard from some students that were like, I was dreading this. And now I realize that there is something to be said about not having my phone in learning spaces and in social spaces," he said. Trustees and a teacher anecdote echoed mixed reactions but generally positive early feedback.

Corey also reported facilities work: three new HVAC compressors at one high school are installed and running while two remain out; room air conditioners have been deployed where needed to manage heat during a recent heat wave. The district relied on Plan C for fall sports during poor air quality days, moving some contests and using partner facilities (YMCA, Eastmont Aquatic Center, Wenatchee Rackets and Athletic Club, Town Toyota) to keep practices and games on track, and transportation staff coordinated extra travel to sites including Coeur d'Alene.

The board recognized the American Baseball Coaches Association academic excellence award won by one high-school baseball team for maintaining a team GPA of 3.45. Corey closed with a reminder about community events (Fiestas Mexicanas) and thanks to staff who adapted during the opening weeks.

Trustees used board communications to commend athletics, transportation and facilities staff and referenced the facilities workshop materials available online for anyone seeking more information about a proposed bond or capital work.
