Wenatchee board advances six policies on first reading, including curriculum and COOP updates

Board policy committee members and Superintendent Corey presented six policy items on first reading and moved them forward to a second reading set for Sept. 23.
Corey summarized Policy 2020 (Course Design, Selection and Adoption of Instructional Materials) as a revision to comply with recent state requirements on inclusive learning standards and materials. "School boards and school districts must adopt inclusive curricula, with diverse, equitable, inclusive, age-appropriate materials," Corey said, and the district will focus on a major social-studies curriculum adoption this year.
A related update to library, information and technology program policy (also linked to the same state guidance) clarified librarian responsibilities and preserved existing procedures, with the policy committee confirming parental access procedures remain intact.
Policy 5011 (prohibited harassment of district staff) was updated to refine definitions and reporting procedures and to align wording around reporting to the district Title IX coordinator. The committee noted consistent phrasing across policies (for example, renaming a reference to "Boy Scouts of America" to "Scouting America").
A new Policy 6801 on capital assets and theft-sensitive assets raises the district capitalization threshold from $5,000 to $10,000 for assets acquired on or after Oct. 1, 2024, and directs the district to build a process to inventory and protect theft-sensitive items. The committee said the district will leverage existing asset-management tools (Follett) for libraries and technology.
Policy 3206 reinstates a separate policy for pregnant and parenting students consistent with prior (2020) Title IX rules; the board said this restores a standalone policy that had been folded under broader Title IX language.
Finally, the district outlined the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), a 62-page emergency planning document attached to Policy 6580. Committee members recommended placing the COOP acronym immediately after the first mention of the plan and running tabletop exercises with cabinet and building administrators to operationalize the document.
No substantive changes were requested beyond the editorial fixes; the committee moved all six items forward to a second read on Sept. 23.
