Enterprise ninth-grader to represent Alabama at national civic speech competition

Lucas Gerard, a ninth-grade student at Enterprise High School, told the Enterprise City Board of Education on Aug. 26 that he won the inaugural Alabama State National Civic Speech competition and will represent Alabama at the national contest in Washington, D.C., this November.
Gerard described the competition format: students submitted essays responding to three prompts, advanced through regional trivia rounds and judged Q&A, and the finalists presented a three-minute defense of their essays to a panel that included a member of Governor Ivey's office and corporate representatives. "I'm incredibly honored to represent the state of Alabama on the national stage in Washington DC this November," Gerard said.
When asked by a board member what local issue he addressed, Gerard said his topic was how the city of Enterprise could work with local nonprofits to enhance veteran services in and around the city. He offered to share a copy of his essay with board members and agreed to follow up.
Board members congratulated Gerard and wished him well at the national competition.
