Issaquah School District introduces new principals, administrators

The Issaquah School District on Monday introduced a wave of new administrators the board said will support the district as it prepares for the coming school year.
Sherry Cox, the district's executive director of secondary education, announced Peter Smith as a new member of the Issaquah High School administrative team. Cox told the board Smith has more than 20 years' experience in international and domestic schools and will begin working at the high school immediately; Smith thanked the board and district leadership.
Melinda Bridal Van, executive director of elementary education, introduced Valerie Lee as principal at Challenger Elementary, Michelle Moon as assistant principal at Briarwood Elementary and Cammie Zabilski as principal at Sunny Hills Elementary. Bridal Van highlighted each new leader's experience in early-childhood education, special education and school leadership and said all bring long-standing ties to the area.
Mariah Banasic, executive director of finance and budget, introduced Kurt Holmes as district controller and Kathy Katterhagen as director of purchasing and contract management. Martin Turney, chief of finance and operations, introduced Greg Jacobs as the district's new director of IT infrastructure.
Superintendent Heather Taujik welcomed Jacqueline Downey as assistant superintendent overseeing academics; Downey, a district graduate who attended Challenger Elementary and Skyline High School, said she was "thrilled to be joining the Issaquah School District" and to return to her hometown.
Board members and the superintendent said the hires strengthen the district's leadership capacity ahead of fall planning and thanked families and staff for their support during the transitions.
The board did not take a vote on these personnel introductions; the announcements were presented as informational items.
