Costs and pilot plans: Presenters said the most sophisticated immersive classroom costs under $1 million to install but yields large weekly throughput when centrally hosted; lower-cost carts and 2D modules were presented as more affordable paths to scale. The Chancellor's Office said the initial systemwide demonstration will prioritize a 2D pilot and targeted mobile deployments, and will route the project through the Digital Center for Innovation with faculty co‑design.
Data on outcomes: Presenters described an ASU study with roughly 1,000 students that compared Dreamscape to business‑as‑usual instruction in introductory biology, reporting higher student satisfaction and a higher likelihood of A grades among participants, with especially large gains for Pell‑eligible and underrepresented students. Presenters said some gains persisted into subsequent semesters.
AI literacy guidelines introduced: Separately, the AI Council presented a draft 7‑page AI literacy guidance document built on six fundamentals (what AI is, differences from human intelligence, safe and effective prompting and evaluation, awareness of bias and limitations, privacy and data governance, and role‑based AI competencies). The draft includes role‑specific checklists for faculty, classified professionals, counselors, librarians and students, and proposes pilots and a system AI literacy scale.
Trustee and public concerns: Board members and public commenters pressed for clarity on wet lab equivalency (for STEM), faculty professional development (especially for part‑time faculty), equity of access across districts (so underfunded colleges would not be left behind), potential data and privacy risks from proprietary systems, and the need for open, student‑controlled approaches where appropriate. The Academic Senate requested additional time to consult with faculty before finalizing the guidelines.
Next steps: The Chancellor's Office will proceed with field consultations, a demonstration of 2D Dreamscape content in partnership with pilot colleges, additional Academic Senate review of the AI literacy guidance, and planning for faculty professional development and equity strategies.
