Parents urge later start dates and transparency on facilities at Canfield board meeting

During public participation, Brooke Vaughn and Jason Henry told the board they represent families and teachers concerned about an earlier August start to the school year and asked for more transparency on facilities planning.

Brooke Vaughn (stating her address) asked that the board take the concerns of parents and teachers seriously and explore alternatives, naming at least three specific options: (1) add instructional minutes to the school day instead of starting earlier, (2) align teacher contract hours to student hours, and (3) distribute surveys of families and staff to gather input. She said many parents value summer time together and urged the board to "give them a choice in the discussion." The chair responded that the board hears the feedback, will ask questions and evaluate options, but could not guarantee an immediate change for the coming year.

Jason Henry urged the board to keep facilities planning visible to the community, noting the district website previously posted facilities updates and asking that similar materials be restored so the community can see budgets, OFCC interactions and timelines. The chair acknowledged the need for ongoing communication and said staff would follow up by email and that a work session could be considered to provide more public dialogue.

Board members emphasized they prioritize students and that the calendar decision for this year would likely remain as presented while staff and the board consider public input and possible further review windows.
