Levy County commissioners voted to approve a $5,306 request from the Cedar Key Fire Department to purchase a mobile radio for the department's brush truck.
County Manager Mary Ellen Harper presented the request, saying municipal fire departments could return for additional funding left open during the budget process. "The first item I have for you is to approve a request for $5,306 from the Cedar Key Fire Department for the purchase of a mobile radio for brush 75," Harper said.
Chief Robinson, representing the Cedar Key Fire Department, told the board the donated forestry truck put into service as a brush truck lacks a radio. "This truck does not have a radio," he said, adding that portable radios sometimes fail "when you get to some of the outer fringes." He said the truck needs a radio for reliable communication during responses.
Commissioner Tim Hodge moved to approve the funding; Commissioner Johnny Hiers seconded. The board voted in favor. The clerk recorded no members of the public in the room during the vote.
The funding will pay for installation of a mobile radio in the department's brush truck; details about the vendor, installation timeline and who will install the unit were not specified in the meeting.
The board moved on after the vote to the next agenda item.
