Whalen said "me and about 4,000 others have signed petitions imploring you to keep the Vanderbilt Beach public library open," described the library as accessible to mobility-challenged patrons and a community hub, and said she understood that if the library were closed the deed provides for reversion to the Pelican Bay Foundation unless an alternate use is approved.
County staff and the chair told Whalen that budget hearings can include comments on library funding, but that any library closure would require a separately advertised public hearing. The chair restarted Whalen’s clock and allowed her to continue her remarks. No final action on the library was taken at the hearing; staff said that any specific closure would need to follow the advertised-notice requirements identified in the deed and county practice.
Speakers made the case that libraries are community infrastructure used by older residents, parents with young children, and people who cannot travel far; Whalen asked the board to consider alternatives and to permit the library advisory board and patrons time to pursue alternate revenue streams before contemplating closure. The board did not vote on library-specific actions during the meeting.
