The Vero Beach City Council voted 4–0 on May 13 to accept an interlocal agreement with Indian River County to fund the Humiston Park boardwalk replacement. City staff said the existing boardwalk — built about 50 years ago — was demolished after sustaining significant hurricane damage in 2022.
City Manager reported that the council previously approved building a boardwalk in lieu of sidewalk and had requested county participation; on Jan. 28 the county agreed to participate up to $400,000, with the county contribution not to exceed the city’s. Staff said design and permitting work has begun, geotechnical testing is complete, and a precast contractor has agreed to donate pilings for the project. The project schedule remains targeted for construction starting November 2026 to avoid turtle season.
Council member discussion was brief and the interlocal agreement passed by unanimous roll call. Staff will continue design and permitting and report on the value of donated precast pilings as the budget is refined.
