Commissioners designate 5-and-50 bicycle ride an official county event; organizers pledge $2,100 in donations

Rush County commissioners on Jan. 27 voted to designate the 2025 5-and-50 bicycle ride as an official county event and accepted donations from the event organizers.
A representative for the Rush County United Fund (Speaker 1) said the 2024 ride drew close to 500 riders from 14 states and thanked county partners including emergency management, the sheriff's department, the city of Rushville and the county road department for their support. The organizer said, "We have a check for $2,000 that I'll be taking upstairs," and added an honorarium of $100 from a speaking engagement would be donated for "the preservation of bridges in in Rush County." The presenter asked commissioners to approve making the ride an official county event for 2025 and to consider working with the community foundation to create an endowed fund for continued proceeds; the motion carried by voice vote.
Commissioners were invited to attend portions of the ride in the various towns it visits. The organizer said the ride has many repeat participants and provides tourism and fundraising benefits to the county; the donated funds will remain in county channels to benefit local agencies, according to the presenter.
