Rush County commissioners give go-ahead to seek up to $500,000 for owner-occupied rehab program

Commissioners on Jan. 27 agreed to move forward with an application for the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) owner-occupied rehabilitation program that could bring up to $500,000 to benefit low- and moderate-income homeowners in Rush County, excluding residents of the City of Rushville.
Victoria Beckert of the Southeastern Indiana Retail Planning Commission told the board the county “would be eligible to apply for up to $500,000 to benefit low to moderate income homeowners, within the county with the exception of City Of Rushville residents.” Beckert said the community foundation has offered to provide matching funds from a Lilly gift so there would be no county match required.
Beckert and colleague Kylie Sparks presented a proposed timeline for outreach and suggested a Quarter 2 submission with community meetings beginning in April. Commissioner questions focused on following county grant policies, internal approvals required for the application and confirming that the county would not be required to provide a local match.
Commissioners moved and seconded the request to proceed; the motion carried by voice vote. Staff were asked to provide county grant-policy guidance and application materials for formal approval before submission.
