Committee approves Aurora University Learning Commons final plan for new student hub at Prairie and Randall

The Building, Zoning and Economic Development Committee unanimously approved a final-plan for Aurora University's proposed Learning Commons at the corner of Prairie Street and Randall Road.
Charlotte Carlton of SmithGroup presented the project as a three-story, roughly 42,000-square-foot building to house library functions, a tech hub, career services, study rooms, a cafe and varied indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. Carlton said the design retains an existing large tree in the site's southeast corner, reduces impervious surface with bioretention and permeable pavers, and includes berming and planting intended to buffer traffic and noise. The scheme also features a donor 'water wall' intended to provide sound attenuation.
On program and schedule, committee members were told the Learning Commons will absorb current library functions and associated academic-support services; the project team said they expect to break ground in early summer (potentially May) and target a 2026 completion on an estimated 12–18 month schedule. Operating hours were described as likely to mirror other campus buildings (roughly 7–8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with possible extensions during finals), and the building will require ID access for students for safety. Carlton stated there are no plans to add solar panels at this site, to keep it consistent with the main campus approach.
Alderman Franco moved approval and Alderman Seville seconded; the motion passed 3-0.
