Committee OKs purchase and site work for airport salt-storage structure, not to exceed $60,000

The Building Zoning and Economic Development Committee on July 23 approved item 25-0586 to purchase a new salt storage structure for the Aurora Municipal Airport.
Steve Andress of the airport division said the existing steel storage structure has suffered salt-related corrosion and is either in need of heavy repair or replacement. The proposed ClearSpan structure would be purchased through the cooperative Sourcewell contract for $40,681.56; with associated concrete and site work the total budget is not to exceed $60,000.
Andress told the committee staff obtained one concrete work quote of about $16,000 and are seeking additional informal quotes through purchasing before final authorization. The plan includes a new concrete slab and installation of jersey barriers to create a three-sided pen that will keep salt away from the structure's steel.
Committee members asked whether the airport has spare salt on hand and how the new structure will be protected from corrosion. Andress said the airport stores only a small amount of salt and that when low, the city's street department delivers loads as needed; the new design separates stored salt from the structure to limit corrosion.
A motion to approve the purchase and associated not-to-exceed amount carried on a committee vote.
