Committee approves $63,500 contract to clear brush, trees at Aurora Municipal Airport

The Building Zoning and Economic Development Committee voted July 23 to accept a $63,500 bid from Homer Tree Service Inc. to remove trees and brush at the Aurora Municipal Airport.
Steve Andress, airport division, told the committee the work covers roughly 19.5 acres and is intended to improve visibility from the air traffic control tower and reduce wildlife habitat near aircraft operations. He said trees larger than 4 inches in diameter will be cut and stumps ground; the contractor will grind the removed trees and leave the resulting chips on site.
When asked how many trees will be removed, Andress said staff do not have a per-tree count and that bidders were encouraged to visit the site and assess conditions on their own. He said the city flagged the area after a safety meeting with air traffic controllers about 18 months ago and submitted the work as a decision package this year.
A motion to approve the acceptance of Homer Tree Service’s bid was made by Alderman Juan Garza and seconded by Alderman Will White. The committee voted in favor and the item moved forward.
The contract was procured through the city's OpenGov purchasing process and classified as a locally funded decision package rather than a federally funded project, Andress said. No public commenters spoke on the item at the meeting.
The committee did not provide a per-tree total in the meeting record; contractors were directed to inspect the site to determine quantities and price accordingly.
